Organisations often need to collect data from communities they work with for a range of reasons such as needs assessment, scoping exercise, and monitoring and evaluation. This course equips participants with knowledge and skills to successfully undertake research assignment within a community setting. Upon successful completion of the course participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion showing all modules covered.
Who is this course for
This course is designed for those working with communities in a range of projects such as health, youth, women, men, settlement, education and employment.
No entry requirements. However, experience implementing community projects is recommended.
The training is delivered in four modules as follows:
Module 1: Ethics issues in research
Module 2: Sampling methods and recruitment
Module 3: Qualitative and quantitative research methods
Module 4: Data management, analysis, interpretation and reporting
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Formulate research questions
- Explain ethics issues in research
- Recruit research participants
- Use a range of research tools and methods in a project
- Analyse, interpret and report research findings

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this course is approximately 14 hours (2 full days). The workload comprises a mixture of scheduled learning, short assignments (activities) and independent study of additional reading resources provided as part of the course. Participants are encouraged to submit each activity as soon as it is completed. This ensures they receive timely feedback on the activity before proceeding to the next module.
